Programming note: I will be enjoying the holidays this week – there will be no post on the 30th. See you again in the new year!
As we wind down for the holidays, I’ve compiled my top ten most viewed blogs for 2024 (along with my now regular “Walkabout Corner” update at the end). If you missed these posts, they are worth a read.
If I’m honest, I’m surprised this one didn’t make it higher on the list, given the magic within Taylor Swift. I celebrate her new album and her song “Fortnight,” which is one of my favorite words.
Here are some thoughts about our attitude towards retirement that can benefit you even if “retirement” is many years away.
8. Work-Life Balance is a Myth
This is a guest post from my dear friend Giada Centofanti, CNTC, ACC, offering a better metaphor for the traditional “balance” of work and life.
This is one of my favorite stories. It offers insights on why it’s important for a leader to hold back and let others speak first.
6. Listening to the Universe, Part 3
In the third installment of my beloved “Listening to the Universe” series, I discuss the synchronicities that led to forming my partnership with Doctums to expand the reach of coaching in higher education.
I share my decision to begin a nomadic journey and explore the country.
I explore the perpetual challenge of being more productive through techniques for “doing less,” leveraging both hemispheres of the brain for guidance.
I am delighted to see this post so high on the list for the year. I wish I had started trusting my intuition earlier in life. It is a potent skill when we know how to listen to it and honor it.
This one went a bit viral, and I’m not surprised. This framework for making an effective request is a remarkably powerful tool for getting clarity when making requests or offers and improving delegation. It’s the kind of post that is worth forwarding to your entire team, department, or company so that everyone has the shared language and can use it effectively. Based on the views, it appears many leaders have done exactly that.
The most viral post of the year was the follow-up to the Doing Less post at #4. This sequel discusses specific techniques for managing your workload, including managing your overzealous boss. Again, it’s worth the read and worth sharing with your team.
Walkabout Corner
I have completed the first of three weeks in Asheville, NC. This is a delightful town. I have never been here before, so I don’t have a “Before Helene” image to compare her to. Perhaps that is a good thing. She is strong, and has much to offer, even as she continues her healing.
This week also marks the first time in my 53-year life that I have lived by myself. I am struck by how much I am enjoying it. I recognize this is partly due to many deep friendships I have developed over the years – friends who ensure I am not lonely, even when alone. One friend pointed out that living alone, she gets to see how much she enjoys being with herself. This resonated deeply with me.
I’ll close with a quote I saw from James Clear last week:
“To learn, wander. To achieve, focus.”
This is a time of learning and wandering for me. There will be plenty of time to focus and achieve in the future.
I am an executive coach and life coach with software executive roots in higher education and EdTech. I coach because I love to help others accelerate their growth as leaders and humans. I frequently write about #management, #leadership, #coaching, #neuroscience, and #arete.
